Types of Refrigerators

Types of Refrigerators

Buying a refrigerator is a complex process and requires thorough research and understanding of various factors like size, space, designs, types, etc. With regular technological developments, many different types of refrigerators have come into the market, offering you numerous options to choose from. Here we are going to discuss the different types of refrigerators that you must look into before buying the perfect one for you.

Following are the different types of refrigerators, a factor that plays a major role in deciding which refrigerator is best suited for you and your home.

Top-freezer Refrigerator:

A top-freezer refrigerator is the classic refrigerator design that has been in the market for a long time. These have the freezer on their upper part and since the freezer is far from the compressor, located on the bottom side of the refrigerator, it keeps the heat out and helps in keeping the unit cool without much effort. It also makes the top freezer refrigerator more energy-efficient.

  1. a) It’s more energy-efficient
  2. b) It’s cheaper
  3. c) More usable space for fresh food

  1. a) It comes in very few modern designs

Bottom-freezer Refrigerator:

As opposed to the top freezer refrigerator, the bottom freezer refrigerator has its freezer located on the bottom side. These refrigerators come in various designs. The bottom freezer refrigerator is best for those who store a greater amount of frozen food compared to fresh food. The freezer door even comes in a drawer design and also has many built-in organizers offering more space for food. These refrigerators are a bit expensive than the top freezer refrigerators and are not a good fit for those who don’t like to bend down every time they need something from the freezer.

  1. a) Numerous modern designs to choose from
  2. b) It has built-in organizers
  3. c) The fridge section is at eye level

d)Bigger freezer space

  1. a) It’s more expensive

Side-by-side Refrigerator:

The side-by-side refrigerators are best for those who use fresh and frozen food equally and need ample space for both types of food. These refrigerators have vertical refrigerators and freezers located right next to each other. The side-by-side refrigerators are slim-styled and don’t need much space to open wide doors. The shelves are narrow and thus don’t have enough space to store large portions of food. Most models of these refrigerators have external water and ice dispenser features. Though the side-by-side refrigerators are budget-friendly, they are not much energy-efficient.

  1. a) Ample space for fresh and frozen food both
  2. b) Slim doors don’t take much space to open

  1. a) It has narrow shelves so it’s impossible to store large portions
  2. b) They are not much energy-efficient

French door Refrigerator:

With the freezer on the bottom and two refrigerator doors opening outward, the french door refrigerators are the latest in trend with modern designs. Most models have one or two freezer drawers with organized shelves located on the bottom. Opening both refrigerator doors together makes everything inside clearly visible, and opening one door at a time prevents the cold air from escaping. The french door refrigerator comes with large storage space for both fresh food and frozen food. The movable bins and trays of the refrigerator help in rearranging the layout of the refrigerator. These are expensive but energy-efficient with a variety of designs, colors, and finish.

  1. a) They have wider shelves and larger bins
  2. b) Less clearance required for opening the refrigerator doors
  3. c) They come in aesthetic designs

  1. a) Less energy-efficient
  2. b) They have a bottom freezer drawer
  3. c) More expensive

Counter-depth Refrigerator:

The counter-depth refrigerators come in designs and depths that fit perfectly in your kitchen. They usually have the same storage space as any other type of refrigerator but they generally don’t stick out more than 1 or 2 inches past the cabinets and counters in the kitchen. These compact refrigerators give a look of built-in refrigerators and are best for tight kitchen spaces. The counter-depth refrigerators come in four main styles namely top freezer, bottom freezer, side-by-side, and french door. These refrigerators have less storage space for frozen and fresh foods compared to standard-depth refrigerators. Also, counter-depth refrigerators are expensive than other refrigerators.

  1. a) They are wider than standard-depth refrigerators
  2. b) Compact and seamless design

  1. a) They are more expensive
  2. b) They are not as deep as the standard refrigerators

Mini Refrigerator:

Mini refrigerators or compact refrigerators are small in size compared to the standard refrigerators and are best suited for small kitchens, rec rooms, offices, etc. These refrigerators come in different configurations and sizes with different designs like double doors, separate freezer compartments, glass front doors, etc. Some models of the mini refrigerator are designed to be set up within cabinets while some are freestanding. These also have shelves to help you organize your food items.

  1. a) They are smaller, lighter, and portable
  2. b) Less power consumption
  3. c) Can be stored in unused corners of rooms

  1. a) Limited storage for foods
  2. b) Sometimes these refrigerators don’t have a freezer

Smart Refrigerator:

Smart refrigerators or internet refrigerators are the latest models of refrigerators available in the market. These can be connected to the internet and controlled with smart devices like phones, tablets, etc. You can see the contents inside the refrigerator on smart devices, send and receive notes, make calendar entries that appear on the refrigerator screen, get alarm notifications when the door is left open for a long time. Smart refrigerators are more energy efficient but expensive than the other refrigerator types. Currently, only a few companies manufacture smart refrigerators with varying features.

  1. a) Connectivity with refrigerator screen and smart devices
  2. b) Extreme comfort and ease of use

  1. a) Expensive compared to other refrigerators
  2. b) High maintenance

Built-in Refrigeration:

Built-in Refrigerators are unique in a couple of different ways. First, they need to be built into a fitted cabinet space and secured on all sides. They weigh as much as a Fiat 500 (mid 2000 pounds) and are as tall as Shaquille O’Neal (7’1”) but they give the kitchen a more professional feel and typically a cleaner aesthetic with its integration into a kitchen’s cabinetry. Secondly, most built-in refrigerators will have their compressors on the top of the machine, rather than on the bottom as-is typical for traditional refrigerators. Also worth noting, generally, built-in refrigerators are going to be only be counter depth and won’t extend deep into the kitchen floor plan.

Freestanding Refrigeration:

In contrast to the large, commercial style stature of the built-in refrigerators above, freestanding fridges are going to be slid into a cavity that can be surrounded by cabinetry but will not be secured to it.

freestanding refrigeration

Freestanding refrigerators historically have been described “in the industry” by where the freezer is built on the refrigerator. There are four basic types of freestanding refrigerators, as illustrated above:

The Bottom Mount, with the freezer at the base of the unit

The Top Mount, which is the most traditional and well known

The Side by Side with the freezer portion on one side and the refrigerator on the other

The French Door refrigerator, with two doors on the top followed by some configuration of drawers on the bottom. These drawers can be all freezer or part freezer and part refrigerator

Under counter Refrigeration:

Undercounter Refrigeration

Under counter refrigeration is going to be more compact and useful for space saving opportunities. Refrigerator units in this category can be installed underneath a countertop and can be as compact as 15” wide for those extremely tight galley kitchens who want to utilize as much space as they can in their kitchen. Compact refrigeration comes with various internal configurations, which can be great to add to an already amazing kitchen design. These configurations range from a beverage center to a wine reserve or even a beer dispenser. Some brands, like Perlick, specialize in making the highest quality under counter refrigerator and utilize the highest quality of components to ensure that no matter where it is installed, the temperature will remain consistent. Some manufacturers of under counter refrigerators offer units that can be installed outside which are frequently integrated into larger outdoor kitchen designs which are becoming more and more popular in today’s world.

How To Fix a Microwave Oven

Microwaves are like light waves. Microwaves can pass through some things, are absorbed by some things and reflected by other things. Light can pass through clear glass, is absorbed by dark objects (like black upholstery in a car) and is reflected by light objects (like white upholstery).

When microwaves pass through something, like glass, they do not have an affect on it. When they are reflected, such as by metal, they also have no affect on the object. But when they are absorbed, like light being absorbed by the black upholstery, heat is generated. One difference with microwaves is that they penetrate food and so cooking occurs throughout, whereas light waves do not penetrate and so heat from the outside inward. *Note that glass and metal actually do absorb some microwaves and heat up because the glass and metal we use is neither perfectly transparent nor perfectly reflective. Most of the heat they pick up in the microwave is through heat conducted from the food itself.

The unique thing about microwaves, and what makes them useful for cooking, is that they happen to be absorbed by water, fat and sugars. Most foods are comprised of some combination of water, fats and sugars. So, because foods absorb microwaves, they get hot, much like black upholstery absorbs light and gets hot. Microwaves pass through glass and some types of plastic generating little or no heat.

The Mechanics of a Microwave

Electrical current travels through the controls, a fuse, a thermal cutoff, a safety interlock on the door, to a high-voltage transformer and then on to the magnetron. The magnetron uses very high voltage and for this reason, we do not recommend that you open your oven to make repairs. This voltage remains in a capacitor even when the oven is unplugged. Because of the deadly voltage, the high cost of parts and the low cost of a new oven, replacement is very often a better option than repair.

The magnetron requires the high voltage to generate microwaves. The waves are then focused into the cooking chamber. The interior surfaces, including the mesh over the window, are metal and reflect the microwaves so that they penetrate the food from all sides to heat the food evenly. A stirrer and/or a turntable are used to further improve the even absorption of the microwaves.

Microwave Tips and Advice

  • It is better in most cases to cook longer at a lower temperature rather than the other way around.
  • To clean food baked onto the interior of the oven, heat a cup of water for about three minutes and then let it sit for another five minutes. The steam will help to loosen the food and make it easier to clean.
  • Even after the oven shuts off, the heat in the food allows it to continue to cook. Let food remain in the oven to allow more even distribution of heat in the food, or remove it from the oven immediately to prevent over cooking.
  • Point a container away from you when opening.
  • If your microwave oven is malfunctioning, try unplugging it for a couple of minutes. When you plug it back in it may reset and resolve the problem.

  • Don’t repair your own microwave oven. Even when unplugged the capacitor has a deadly high voltage charge.
  • Never heat sealed packages or containers in the microwave unless instructed to do so.
  • Puncture food such as whole apples and potatoes so steam can escape.
  • Don’t overheat liquids, they can virtually explode out of their container when moved or something is placed into the liquid.
  • Use a pot holder when removing anything from the microwave oven.
  • Never stand over a hot container when opening.
  • While there are cases in which metal can be safely placed inside the microwave, it should be kept well away from any part of the interior. Metal (this includes foil) also interferes with the microwaves even distribution, so the use of metal should be minimized.

How Does a Refrigerator Work?

Appliance repairs are nearly inevitable, but don’t despair, fixing a refrigerator isn’t that difficult. The most important thing is to understand how a refrigerator works and how to diagnose the problem. We’ll show you how to figure out what is wrong and how to repair a refrigerator. Refrigerator replacement parts are readily available through several sources and it is possible to get them overnight. So before you spend money on an appliance repairman, why not give it a try yourself?

A refrigerator doesn’t actually cool things, it removes the heat from them. But then you probably don’t want a physics lesson. But you may wonder where the “cold” comes from. So here is a little bit more physics. When a gas goes from a state of high pressure to a state of low pressure, the temperature of the gas drops.

Your refrigerator has a compressor and a closed system of tubing that contains a gas (the refrigerant). The compressor pumps the refrigerant and compresses it. The refrigerant flows through the coils on the back or under the refrigerator and through an expansion valve to the inside of the freezer. As the refrigerant passes through the expansion valve the pressure drops and so does the temperature.

Inside the freezer a fan circulates air over the cool tubing and the refrigerant absorbs the heat from the freezer’s relatively warmer air. If you prefer to just think of the fan blowing cold air into the appliance, that’s fine, it all works out to pretty much the same results. But technically, the heat is being pumped out rather than the cold being pumped in.

The cold air in most refrigerators, but not all, comes from the freezer. The cold air in the freezer passes through vents to the refrigerator. A thermostat in the refrigerator activates the compressor whenever the temperature rises above the set point on the temperature control. In some newer models there is a separate cooling coil for the freezer and the refrigerator and thus two temperature controls.

As the air in the refrigerator cools, the water in the air (humidity) condenses. Water that condenses in the freezer will freeze into frost. Most modern refrigerators have an automatic defroster in the freezer which prevents the build up of frost. The defroster is simply a heating element that is controlled by a defrost timer and a thermostat. The water from the melted frost drains out of the refrigerator into a pan beneath the refrigerator and evaporates.

A door switch closes a circuit when the door is opened and turns on the interior light. When the door is open some refrigerators will disable some components such as the fan, defrost heater or “through the door” ice and water dispensing.

A common question we hear pertains to operating a refrigerator in the garage or other unheated space during cold weather. Bottom line, refrigerators and freezers don’t cool efficeintly when operated at temperatures below, roughly, 45 degrees (F). The first reason is that the outside temperature may get low enough that the thermostat inside the refrigerator never gets warm enough to activate the compressor and so the freezer warms up to the outside temperature. Another problem is that if it gets too cold, the refrigerant pressure becomes too low to generate the necessary cold and so the freezer only chills down to the outside temperature.

How To Fix Water Heater Problems

Water heaters are an appliance we rarely think about, until there is a problem. Whether your water heater is leaking, making noises or just stopped working, we can help you diagnose and repair the problem.

Water heaters are not really all that mysterious. A water heater heats water on a continual basis, whether you are using hot water or not. When you draw off hot water, cold water enters the tank to replace the hot water drawn out. When the thermostat senses the water temperature has dropped below the hold level, it initiates the heating element(s) in an electric water heater or the burner in a gas model. Even if you don’t use hot water, the temperature in the tank will fall and so the water will be periodically reheated to bring it back up to the desired temperature. Because of this wasted energy, it is advisable to turn down the thermostat when away for extended periods of time, such as when you are on vacation.

Which Water Heater is Better: Gas or Electric?

Gas and electric water heaters are about equally common. An advantage of electric is that they don’t require venting of the combustion gases as in a gas model. However, electric heaters may be more expensive to operate and generally don’t heat cold water as quickly as gas models can. However, your choice may be dictated by what type of unit you are replacing. Often, changing from one energy source to another can be prohibitively expensive.

Detailed Explanation of Water Heater Operation

The cold water supply line connects to the water heater, typically on top of the appliance. Instead of dumping the water on top of the hot water in the tank, a dip tube carries the cold water down to the bottom of the tank. The outbound hot water line takes the water off the top of the tank. That way, when hot water is drawn out, it is at full temperature. Only after most of the hot water has been used do you start to get the hot and cold water mix.

When you open a hot water tap, the water pressure from the cold water supply line pushes the water out of the water heater and refills the tank with cold water. As cold water enters the tank, the thermostat(s) senses the lower temperature and triggers the heating mechanism.

Water heaters have a temperature and pressure relief valve to allow water to escape if the water pressure or temperature exceeds the limits of the tank. Tanks normally operate up to 150 psi. The T & P valve is designed to release water from the tank when the pressure exceeds 150 psi. The valve will also open if the water temperature reaches 210 degrees (F). The T & P valve should have pipes connected to safely carry away the water without flooding or exposing people or pets to scalding hot water.

In the center of the water heater is an anode, sometimes called a sacrificial anode. The purpose of this piece of metal is to corrode instead of the tank corroding. The corrosive action of the hot water attacks the anode, extending the life of the tank. Furthermore, the tank has a bonded layer of glass to further protect it from corrosion.

Water heaters build up sediment as it settles out of the water. This sediment should be periodically drained from the tank to increase the life of the appliance and to improve heating efficiency. A drain valve is located near the bottom of the tank and should be used to drain off the sediment or anytime water must be drained from the tank.

Details Unique to an Electric Water Heater

On an electric heater the thermostats are in contact with the tank, and operate mechanically. The thermostat is like a switch. The switch is on by default, but when the temperature of the tank rises to a certain point, it expands and pushes a small metal rod against a dimpled piece of metal. That movement breaks the contact in the thermostat and stops current from flowing to the heating elements. The upper thermostat also functions as a reset switch and is sometimes referred to as the ECO (Energy Cut Off). Pressing the ECO restores to power to the water heater.

Full size electric water heaters typically have two heating elements, the upper and the lower. Most models are designed for the elements to operate independently, but in some models they may only operate in tandem. When the thermostats are closed, current flows to the immersion heating elements inside the tank.

Details Unique to a Gas Water Heater

The thermostat on a gas heater is an integral part of the gas control valve and is immersed inside the tank. When the temperature drops, the thermostat signals the gas control valve to supply gas to the burner. However, before it allows gas to flow, the thermocouple must signal that the pilot light is lit, otherwise a dangerous gas leak would occur.

The thermocouple is situated in or near the pilot flame. The heat of the flame creates millivolt current which engages a magnet in the gas valve. The gas valve releases gas in a burner adjacent to the pilot flame and is ignited. If the pilot goes out, the current stops and the magnet disengages, preventing the gas valve from opening.

Gas water heaters must be vented to the outdoors. The combustion of natural gas results in toxic carbon monoxide. In the center of the tank is a flew to carry the gases away to the vent mounted on top of the tank. The vent is critical to your safety because it carries the carbon monoxide outside your home.

Deep Fryer Issues We Commonly Repair

One of the most common deep fryer issues business owners face is that the pilot light will not stay lit. In other cases, the thermostat is faulty, sometimes running erratically (not shutting off) and overheating the oil. A commercial deep fryer is an expensive and potentially dangerous piece of equipment. Trying to fix one on your own could further damage the unit or even cause you to injure yourself. Call a professional to repair your commercial deep fryer and take the risks out of the equation.

At REPAIR NAIROBI, we specialize in the repair of commercial deep fryers and other commercial kitchen appliances. We provide fast service that you can depend on to keep your business up and running, every time. Contact our commercial appliance repair experts today  or schedule service right here online.

Dryer Repair Service

Our Dryer Technicians Have You Covered in the Laundry Room!

Dryers are a valuable, time-saving appliance. Most people are pretty dependent on this modern laundry-room convenience, so it can be very frustrating if problems occur. Even if your dryer isn’t completely broken, it can be costly to keep running if it isn’t operating efficiently. If you’ve noticed spikes in your energy bills, slow drying, or another problem, schedule service to get your dryer into top shape.

Gas & Electric Dryer Repair or Vent Maintenance

Dryers have a rotating drum called a tumbler, which circulates heated air and evaporates moisture. The humid air produced from this process is pushed through the venting system to the outside of your house, making room for dry air to enhance the drying process. Our technicians can repair any part of this system or clean your dryer vent to keep your home safe and running smoothly.

There are two main types of dryers that we repair:

  • Electric – These dryers cost a little less than gas ones up-front and are also easier and less expensive to install. Exhaust requirements are very minimal: steam venting only.
  • Gas – Dryers operating on natural gas or propane cost a bit more up-front than electric dryers, but they end up being the more economical option over time. Specialized venting is required.

With their specialized knowledge of your type of dryer, our team of technicians will provide a quick diagnosis and viable solution for the problem. You can trust REPAIR NAIROBI with your dryer repair and services.

  • Your dryer isn’t producing heat.If your dryer drum is spinning but not producing any heat, it may be due to a bad fuse, temperature switch, thermostat, or heating coils.
  • The drum doesn’t spin.If the motor in your dryer is running effectively, but the drum doesn’t spin, it most likely due to a broken belt. A bad roller, motor, or idler pulley could also be the cause.
